Growth Stage

This orchid’s appearance is as intriguing as its name, Cochleanthes amazonica, often called the "fan-shape orchid." One look at its graceful, arching leaves arranged in a perfect fan, and you'll understand why. This elegant growth habit gives the plant a distinctive and perpetually tidy appearance. You may also see this gem referred to by its synonym, Warczewiczella amazonica.

A true species orchid, Cochleanthes amazonica hails from the lush, humid forests of the Amazon basin, with its range extending across western South America to northern Brazil, including Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It thrives as an epiphyte, nestled on tree branches in the dappled light of the forest understory. In its native habitat, it experiences warm, humid conditions year-round at elevations ranging from approximately 500 to 3,280 feet. This tells us it appreciates a consistently warm and moist environment.

The main event, of course, is the flower. Emerging from the base of the leafy fans on a single-flowered inflorescence, the bloom is truly a sight to behold. It is a substantial flower, often reaching 2 to 4 inches across, with pristine, waxy white petals and sepals. The broad, prominent lip is the real showstopper, with a brilliant splash of deep violet-purple striations that radiate from the throat, creating a stunning focal point. Adding to its allure is a delightful fragrance often described as a blend of candy and roses. While it typically blooms from fall into winter, it has been known to flower at other times of the year. The American Orchid Society has recognized the value of this species in breeding, with its hybrids, such as Cochlezella Tsiku Chuchango 'Unbelievable' (a cross with Amazing), receiving a First Class Certificate (FCC/AOS).

From a botanical standpoint, Cochleanthes amazonica is quite interesting. It is a sympodial orchid that grows in a distinctive fan shape and lacks pseudobulbs for water storage. This is a key detail, as it means the plant cannot tolerate drying out. The leaves are a lovely shade of bright green, soft in texture, and can reach up to 20 inches in length, creating a lush, full appearance. The flowers are borne on inflorescences that can be erect to slightly pendulous and grow up to 10 inches long.

Care Instructions

Light: Provide moderate, filtered light. An east-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct, intense sunlight which can scorch the soft leaves.

Water: This orchid requires consistent moisture. The potting medium should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Due to the lack of pseudobulbs, the roots should never be allowed to dry out completely.

Temperature: Intermediate to warm temperatures are preferred, ideally between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 30°C).

Humidity: High humidity, around 50-70%, is essential for this rainforest native. Good air circulation is also crucial to prevent fungal issues in the moist environment.

Potting Medium: A moisture-retentive medium that also provides good drainage is recommended. Sphagnum moss, or a mix of fine fir bark, perlite, and charcoal, works well. Repotting should be done when the potting medium begins to break down.

Offered in 5" eco pots in limited supply.
