The Darkest Cycnoches Spike in the House
A dark-flowered Swan Orchid cross built specifically for dramatic color and clean presentation. It pairs two exceptionally dark parents to push the deep burgundy tones as far toward black as this genus can go.
Each bloom opens in a shade of mahogany-red so dense it registers as near-black in indirect light, set off by a glossy, contrasting lip. The flowers sit upright along a graceful, arching spike with firm, heavy substance that holds its form for weeks.
The main draw here is sheer flower density paired with that glossy, moody color palette. Cycnoches put on one of the most remarkable shows in the orchid world, dropping their leaves in autumn to launch heavy, fragrant sprays from leafless pseudobulbs like an absolute surprise party. They require minimal space for most of the year, make modest demands on a windowsill, and offer a winter display that routinely stops visitors in their tracks.
Quick Care Guide
-
Light: Bright, indirect light during active growth. A south or west window with sheer protection. Leaves should remain a pale lime-green.
-
Water: Heavy water and fertilizer while growing in spring and summer. Stop watering entirely when leaves turn yellow and drop in autumn.
-
Temperature: Nights 62–68°F, days 75–90°F. Warmth is essential during the active growing phase.
-
Fertilizer: High-nitrogen fertilizer weekly during active growth; zero fertilizer once dormant.
-
Mature size: Pseudobulbs reach eight to twelve inches tall; pendulous inflorescences extend up to eighteen inches.
