Dendrobium farmeri is a stunning epiphyte and lithophyte orchid species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Known for its distinct, drooping inflorescences, it produces gorgeous cascades of delicate pastel blooms that make it a favorite among intermediate and advanced growers.

• Origin: Native to the Himalayan foothills, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, typically found growing in warm-to-cool montane forests.

• Flowers: Produces dense, pendent (hanging) racemes featuring 2-inch (5 cm) waxy flowers. The sepals and petals are usually a soft pale pink, white, or cream, contrasting sharply with a bright, velvety golden-yellow to orange lip edged with fine fringe.

• Foliage: Features striking, four-sided (tetragonal) or deeply furrowed pseudobulbs that taper toward the base, topped with a few leathery, dark green lanceolate leaves near the apex.

Orchid Care

• Light: Bright, indirect light (2,500–3,500 foot-candles or 25,000–38,000 lux). Some morning sun can help encourage blooming.

• Temperature: Warm-to-intermediate growing conditions (70°F–85°F / 21°C–29°C during summer, with a winter resting period dropping to 50°F–60°F / 10°C–15°C at night to trigger blooms).

• Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (60–75%) paired with robust, continuous air movement.

• Water & Substrate: Requires heavy watering and regular fertilizer during the spring and summer growing season. Needs a distinct dry rest in late autumn and winter with very minimal water (just enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling) until new growth or flower buds appear. Plant in a well-draining medium like coarse bark or mount on cork/wood.
