Heavy Flowering White Dendrobium Built for the Long Haul
A staple of the Hawaiian cut-flower trade that happens to make an absolute powerhouse of a windowsill plant.
Each long, arching stem carries up to twenty flowers in pure, icy white with just a hint of cool green at the very throat. The blooms have a waxy, porcelain-like substance that feels almost carved, holding their form and crisp color for up to two months on the plant. The petals curve back slightly like a flock of small white birds in mid-flight.
If you want an orchid that gives you maximum payoff for minimal fuss, this is the one. It produces multi-spiking displays on tall, cane-like pseudobulbs that take up very little horizontal room on a bench. It handles heat like a champ, loves bright light, and blooms with a level of sheer generosity that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with trickier plants. A single mature cane can throw sequential spikes for months at a time.
Quick Care Guide
-
Light: High, filtered light. An east or west window with direct morning sun or bright indirect light all day keeps canes strong.
-
Water: Water heavily during active growth, then allow the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings.
-
Temperature: Nights 62–68°F, days 75–90°F. Thrives in warm conditions and appreciates heat.
-
Fertilizer: Balanced orchid fertilizer applied weekly at half-strength during active spring and summer growth.
-
Mature size: Canes grow 24 to 36 inches tall, with arching flower spikes adding another 12 to 18 inches.
