Here in Hawaii, everyone recognizes the classic, tall Den-Phal, the kind used for leis, with sprays of flowers on canes that can reach 2-3 ft. These compact versions are their charming, shorter cousins.  Hybridizers took those magnificent, tall plants and intentionally selected for smaller stature, or crossed them with naturally compact species, to give us all the floral firepower in a much more manageable package.

The result is a plant that embodies the classic Den-Phal look. The flowers are the main event, held on graceful, arching sprays that emerge from the top of the canes. Each bloom is round, flat, and full, strongly resembling a Phalaenopsis flower, hence the name. While they are a feast for the eyes, they generally are not grown for fragrance. The color palette is enormous and brilliant. Dendrobium Enobi offers rich, magenta-hued blossoms.

Botanically, these are sympodial orchids with stout, upright, hard canes that serve as water and energy storage. Unlike their lanky relatives, these compact growers typically top out at a height of 6 to 12 in. The canes are lined along their upper half with several leathery, evergreen leaves that are about 3-6 in. long. A fantastic trait of this group is that mature canes can produce flower spikes for several years, so don't be too quick to cut old ones. They tend to be most floriferous in the fall but can often send out spikes at other times of the year.

They deliver the same spectacular, long-lasting floral show as their larger counterparts, but are perfectly suited for growing on a windowsill or a crowded lanai.

Care Instructions

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east, shaded south, or west-facing window is ideal. They require more light than a Phalaenopsis to bloom well.

Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry. As evergreen orchids, they do not have a pronounced winter dormancy and should be watered year-round. Reduce frequency slightly during cooler winter months when growth slows. Never allow the pot to stand in water.

Temperature: These are warm-growing orchids. Ideal daytime temperatures are 75-85°F, with nighttime temperatures between 60-70°F. They do not require a significant temperature drop to initiate blooming and should be protected from temperatures below 55°F.

Humidity: Prefers humidity levels of 50-70%. Use a humidity tray or humidifier if your air is dry. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal or bacterial issues.

Potting Medium: A well-draining, medium-grade orchid mix is perfect. A blend of fir bark, charcoal, and perlite works very well. Repot every 2-3 years or when the potting medium breaks down, preferably after flowering is finished and new root growth is visible.

Grown in 2" or 4" pots.
