his delightful miniature orchid is a primary hybrid, a direct cross between two distinct species, resulting in a captivating and easy-to-grow plant. Its charming blooms and compact size make it a favorite among orchid enthusiasts.
This intergeneric hybrid is the result of a cross between Gomesa flexuosa and Ionopsis utricularioides, a lineage officially registered by the Singapore Botanic Gardens in 2001 as Ionmesa Popcorn. The cultivar 'Highlands' is a particularly notable selection of this hybrid.
The parentage of this orchid brings together two beautiful species from the Americas. Gomesa flexuosa hails from the coastal mountains and inland waterways of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, where it can be found from sea level up to approximately 3,900 feet. In its native habitat, it experiences a range of temperatures from cool to hot. The second parent, Ionopsis utricularioides, has a broader range, found from Florida and Mexico down through Central America and the Caribbean to parts of South America. It typically grows as an epiphyte on trees in humid forests and swamps, enjoying intermediate to warm conditions.
The flowers of Incdm. Popcorn 'Highlands' are the main attraction, showcasing a fascinating color transformation. The small, roughly half-inch blossoms emerge a cheerful buttery yellow and gradually transition to a soft, delicate pinkish-white. This sequential blooming along the flower spike creates a multi-hued display, reminiscent of a string of popcorn, which likely inspired its whimsical name. The flowers are held on gracefully arching stems that rise above the foliage. While not powerfully fragrant, a light, sweet scent may be detected.
Botanically, this is a compact sympodial orchid. The pseudobulbs are small and ovoid, topped with one or two lance-shaped, bright green leaves that can reach 4-6 inches in length. The plant's overall height is typically under 10 inches, making it an ideal candidate for growers with limited space. The foliage is relatively thin, a trait inherited from its Gomesa parentage.
Care Instructions
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east or west-facing window with some sheer curtain protection is ideal. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is approaching dryness. This orchid prefers consistent moisture but should not be allowed to sit in water. The frequency of watering will depend on your specific growing conditions, typically every 5-7 days.
Temperature: This orchid is adaptable to a range of temperatures, thriving in intermediate to warm conditions. Ideal daytime temperatures are between 70-80°F, with a slight drop at night.
Humidity: Aim for a humidity level of 50-70%. In drier environments, a humidity tray or a room humidifier can be beneficial. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues.
Potting Medium: A well-draining orchid mix is crucial. A fine to medium-grade fir bark mix, sometimes with the addition of perlite or sphagnum moss to retain some moisture, is a suitable choice. This orchid's climbing growth habit also makes it a good candidate for mounting on cork or tree fern plaques, provided higher humidity and more frequent watering can be maintained. Repot every one to two years, or when the potting medium begins to break down.
