The Ianclarkara Cheyenne Marie 'Lemoncello' is a captivating intergeneric hybrid that delights with its cheerful, pale greenish-yellow blooms, reminiscent of its namesake, the Italian lemon liqueur. This particular clone is a cross of (Pabstia Eva's Blue Amazon x Zygopetalum Louisendorf), making for a fascinating blend of genetics. Delving into its lineage, the parentage traces back to:
Pabstia Eva's Blue Amazon which is a hybrid itself, though specific species parents are less commonly cited in general references. Pabstia, however, are typically found in the Atlantic Forest region of Brazil, often growing as epiphytes or lithophytes in humid, montane environments.
Zygopetalum Louisendorf which is also a hybrid. Zygopetalums are primarily native to South America, particularly Brazil, and can be found growing in diverse habitats from cool, moist cloud forests to warmer, more open woodlands. They are often semi-terrestrial or epiphytic.
The flowers of 'Lemoncello' are a delightful surprise, typically measuring around 2 inches in width. The base color is a charming pale greenish-yellow, finely dotted or "freckled" with light purple, especially on the lip. The lip itself often displays more pronounced purple markings, creating a striking contrast. While not always strongly fragrant, some individuals may detect a light, sweet scent, particularly on warmer days. Blooming can occur in various seasons, often in late winter to spring, though robust culture can encourage additional flowering throughout the year.
This is a semi-terrestrial Zygopetalum-type orchid, meaning it appreciates a balance between terrestrial and epiphytic growing conditions. The plant itself is compact, typically reaching a height of 10 to 12 inches with attractive, long, lanceolate foliage that stands upright. The leaves are a vibrant green, sometimes exhibiting subtle burgundy mottling, adding to the plant's appeal even when not in bloom. Older pseudobulbs may eventually shed their leaves as the plant matures and produces new growth, which is a normal part of its growth cycle.
Care Instructions:
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is often ideal, or a south/west-facing window with some sheer curtaining to protect from harsh direct sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves, leading to yellowing.
Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium approaches dryness. This orchid appreciates consistent moisture but absolutely dislikes sitting in soggy conditions, which can quickly lead to root rot. Allow for good drainage and avoid letting the pot sit in standing water. The roots should appear plump and a pale green color when healthy.
Temperature: Ianclarkara 'Lemoncello' prefers intermediate to cool temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, with a night drop to 55°F to 65°F. A good temperature differential between day and night can help encourage blooming.
Humidity: Maintain moderate to high humidity, ideally between 50% and 70%. Good air circulation is crucial to prevent fungal issues, especially in higher humidity environments. Placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water can help increase ambient humidity, ensuring the pot is elevated above the water line.
Potting Medium: A well-draining, somewhat fine potting mix is recommended. A blend of fine fir bark, perlite, and a bit of sphagnum moss works well to retain some moisture while still allowing ample air circulation to the roots. Repot every 1 to 2 years, or when the medium starts to break down, typically after flowering when new growth is just beginning. When repotting, gently remove the old medium, trim any black, soggy, or hollow roots, and then suspend the plant in its new pot, filling around the roots.
Grown in 4" pots.
