For those who crave deep, moody colors and unique architectural forms, Masdevallia Pinot Noir is an absolute must-have. This captivating hybrid is celebrated for its sophisticated, wine-colored blooms that seem to glow with a velvety texture.
The flowers are remarkably elegant, featuring the classic Masdevallia "kite" shape with elongated sepals that taper into delicate tails. The color is a rich, saturated burgundy—reminiscent of a fine vintage wine—often accented by darker veining that adds incredible depth to every blossom.
Why You’ll Love It:
-
Deep, Dramatic Color: True to its name, the Pinot Noir offers some of the richest purple-red hues in the orchid world, providing a stunning contrast to the typical bright pinks and yellows of other genera.
-
Compact Elegance: This orchid stays relatively small, making it a perfect choice for terrariums, Wardian cases, or those with limited windowsill space.
-
Frequent Bloomer: Known for its reliability, this hybrid can produce flowers multiple times a year when kept in its "happy place," often displaying several blooms at once.
-
Lush Foliage: Even when not in flower, the thick, paddle-shaped, bright green leaves create a dense and attractive tuft of greenery.
Quick Care Guide:
-
Light: Low to medium filtered light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the sensitive leaves. An east-facing window is usually perfect.
-
Water: Keep consistently moist. Unlike Cattleyas, Masdevallias do not have pseudobulbs to store water, so they should never be allowed to dry out completely.
-
Humidity: High humidity is key (60% to 80%). Use a humidity tray or a room humidifier to keep the air moist around the plant.
-
Temperature: Cool to intermediate. It thrives in temperatures between 55°F and 75°F. Good air circulation is essential to prevent spotting on the leaves in these cooler, moist conditions.
-
Fertilizer: Use a very weak solution of balanced orchid fertilizer every two weeks. These plants are sensitive to salt buildup, so it is best to flush the pot with pure water once a month.
