Maxillaria scalariformis is an unusual and extremely attractive orchid species native to Costa Rica and Panama. The plant features an upright, ladder-like growth habit that branches and clumps, eventually forming a bushy appearance. The narrow leaves, ranging from 2 to 4 inches long, are arranged elegantly up the stem, displaying a beautiful deep green-bronze waxy shine with striking reddish undersides. This species is known for its vigorous growth and frequent flowering, producing dense clusters of bright pink, crystalline, star-shaped blooms (about 1 inch across) that are held close to the stem. Maxillaria scalariformis can bloom two to four times per year, making it an attractive addition to any collection.
Light: Prefers very bright, indirect light (2,500–3,500 footcandles). Blooms best in bright conditions but avoid direct, harsh sun.
Water: Keep the plant wet at all times; it does not tolerate drying out. Water frequently—3 to 5 times per week is recommended. Use moss as the potting medium, and only repot when necessary, taking care not to disturb the roots.
Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to cool conditions, with a minimum of 52°F and a maximum of 80°F.
Humidity: Average household humidity (40% and above) is sufficient, though higher humidity is always beneficial.
Fertilizer: Feed alongside other orchids; no special fertilizer requirements.
Blooming Season: Maxillaria scalariformis is a free-flowering species, capable of blooming throughout the year under optimal conditions.
Offered blooming size in 3" pots.
