Let's dive into the vibrant world of Odontocidium Catatante 'Pacific Sun Spots'! This dynamic hybrid is known for its energetic display of spotted blooms, truly living up to its "sun spots" moniker.

The fascinating parentage of Odcdm. Catatante is Oncostele Wildcat crossed with Oncidium Sphacetante. Tracing this back, you find a rich tapestry of Oncidium species, as well as Rhynchostele uroskinneri. These ancestors contribute to the 'Pacific Sun Spots' vibrant colors and often robust nature.

The flowers of 'Pacific Sun Spots' are a captivating blend of orangish-brown with contrasting yellow. The petals and sepals are typically a warm, rusty orange or bronze, heavily overlaid with darker, burgundy-brown spotting, giving it that "sun spots" effect. The labellum is usually a bright, clear yellow, which truly makes the other colors pop. The flowers are generally 2 to 3 inches across and are borne on impressive, tall, branched spikes that can reach 30 to 36 inches in height, creating a cascade of color. While some Oncidium-alliance hybrids are known for strong fragrances, 'Pacific Sun Spots' typically has a very light, subtle scent, sometimes described as a faint caramel or even a very light, almost plastic-like aroma – certainly not overpowering, but an interesting nuance. This particular clone has received an Award of Merit (AM) from the American Orchid Society, a testament to its exceptional quality and desirability. The blooming season for 'Pacific Sun Spots' is often late winter to spring, though robust plants can sometimes bloom multiple times a year.

The foliage of Odcdm. Catatante 'Pacific Sun Spots' features plump, ovoid pseudobulbs, usually about 2 to 3 inches tall, positioned along a creeping rhizome. Each pseudobulb produces one or two strap-like, lanceolate leaves, typically a healthy medium green, growing to about 10 to 15 inches in length. The overall plant can reach a height of 2 to 3 feet with its impressive flower spikes.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is best. East-facing windows are often ideal, or a south/west-facing window with a sheer curtain to diffuse intense midday sun. Light green leaves indicate good light; dark green leaves suggest too little, while reddish tints can mean too much direct sun.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is nearly dry. It's important to allow good drainage and avoid letting the pot sit in water. During active growth and flowering, they appreciate more frequent watering; reduce watering slightly during less active periods.
  • Temperature: 'Pacific Sun Spots' thrives in intermediate to warm temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures between 65 and 85°F, with a night drop to 55 to 65°F. They can tolerate slightly warmer days, but try to keep them below 90°F.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity, around 50% to 70%, is appreciated. Ensure good air circulation, especially with higher humidity, to prevent issues.
  • Potting Medium: A well-draining, coarse potting mix is essential. A blend of fir bark, coconut chips, charcoal, or perlite is generally very suitable. Repot yearly, or when the medium starts to break down, typically after blooming.

Grown in 4" pots, currently in blooming size only.
