Growth Stage

Known for its eye-catching color, Odontocidium Wildcat 'Yellow' is a carnival of sunny yellow splashed with bold burgundy markings, reminiscent of a wild feline's coat. This orchid is a complex hybrid, now more formally known as Oncostele Wildcat.

This plant's story begins high in the mountains of Central and South America. Its parentage is a cross between Oncostele Rustic Bridge and Oncidium Crowborough. Digging deeper into its lineage, we find a rich heritage from several species. A significant portion of its genetics comes from Oncidium fuscatum, found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, inhabiting elevations from 2,000 to 3,900 ft. Another key ancestor is Rhynchostele uroskinneri, a cool-growing orchid from the mountains of Guatemala, typically found at lofty heights of 5,900 to 7,200 ft. Finally, Oncidium leucochilum, native to Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, contributes its robust characteristics. This diverse background makes for a resilient and adaptable orchid.

The flowers, approximately 2 to 3 in. in size, are the main attraction, with their vibrant yellow sepals and petals irregularly mottled with deep red to brown blotches. The lip is broad and ruffled, predominantly yellow, creating a striking contrast. These flowers are presented on tall, often branching inflorescences that can reach over 30 in. in height, creating a spectacular display. While some other 'Wildcat' clones are known for their fragrance, 'Yellow' is not reliably scented.

The plant itself is a fairly compact grower. It produces ovoid to round pseudobulbs, each topped with one or two lance-shaped leaves that are typically a light grassy green. It's not uncommon for the foliage of this particular hybrid to have minor cosmetic imperfections like small black spots or tiny pits, which are considered a genetic trait and not a sign of poor health.

While other cultivars of Oncostele Wildcat, such as 'Bobcat', have received an Award of Merit (AM) from the American Orchid Society, the 'Yellow' variety is celebrated for its cheerful and brilliant coloration.

Care Instructions

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is ideal. Leaves should be a light green; if they are dark green, the plant may not be receiving enough light to bloom well.

Water: Water thoroughly, allowing the potting medium to approach dryness between waterings. The frequency will depend on the potting medium, pot size, and ambient humidity. Wrinkled pseudobulbs can indicate a need for more water.

Temperature: This hybrid is adaptable and thrives in intermediate temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures between 65-80°F and nighttime temperatures between 55-65°F. It can tolerate short periods of warmer or cooler temperatures.

Humidity: A humidity level of 50-70% is ideal. In drier environments, placing the orchid on a tray of pebbles and water (ensuring the pot is not sitting in the water) can increase local humidity.

Potting Medium: A well-draining orchid mix is essential. A mix of medium-grade fir bark, perlite, and charcoal works well. Repotting is typically needed every one to two years, or when the potting medium begins to break down.
