Growth Stage

An intriguing hybrid, Oncidium Martian Leather 'Berrylicious' presents a captivating display of color and form. This orchid is a complex intergeneric hybrid, a testament to the artistry and patience of orchid breeders.

This hybrid's story begins with its parents, Oncidium Geneva Red and Oncidium Pearberry. These, in turn, are the products of generations of careful hybridization, leading back to a host of species native to the Americas. The lineage of 'Berrylicious' is a veritable atlas of orchid habitats, from the cloud forests of the Andes to the coastal plains of Central America.

Its primary species ancestors include:

  • Oncidium alexandrae: Hailing from the cool, moist, high-elevation forests of Colombia and Ecuador, typically between 6,500 and 10,000 ft. These plants thrive in cool to intermediate temperatures.

  • Oncidium hastatum: Found in Mexico, growing in oak and pine forests at elevations from 4,500 to 7,500 ft., experiencing intermediate temperatures.

  • Oncidium fuscatum: A native of Ecuador and Peru, this species grows in a variety of habitats from dry forests to wet cloud forests, at elevations from 1,300 to 7,200 ft., preferring intermediate to warm conditions.

  • Oncidium schroederianum: This species is native to Costa Rica and Panama, where it inhabits wet montane forests at elevations of 3,000 to 6,500 ft., enjoying cool to intermediate temperatures.

  • Oncidium noezlianum: Found in the high-elevation cloud forests of Peru and Bolivia, between 8,200 and 11,500 ft., these are decidedly cool-growing orchids.

  • Oncidium nobile: Native to the mountains of Colombia, it grows at elevations of 7,900 to 9,800 ft. and prefers cool growing conditions.

  • Oncidium harryanum: This species is found in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador at elevations of 6,000 to 8,000 ft., requiring cool to intermediate temperatures.

  • Oncidium spectatissimum: A native of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, it grows in wet montane forests at elevations of 5,000 to 9,800 ft., in cool to intermediate conditions.

  • Oncidium luteopurpureum: Found in the mountains of Colombia and Ecuador at elevations of 6,500 to 9,800 ft, this is another cool to intermediate grower.

The flowers of 'Berrylicious' are a stunning combination of rich, velvety burgundy and crisp white, often with a hint of raspberry or magenta at the petal edges. The lip is broad and full, typically showcasing a dramatic splash of the deep burgundy against a clean white background, sometimes accented with a touch of yellow in the crest. While a distinct fragrance is not always noted, some have detected a faint, sweet scent.

Botanically, this sympodial orchid develops ovoid to slightly elongated pseudobulbs, which serve as water and nutrient storage organs. These are topped by one or two lanceolate leaves, typically 10-15 inches in length. The foliage is a vibrant green. The plant itself is a moderate grower, reaching a height of about 18-24 inches, not including the flower spike. Blooming can occur in the spring and fall, with the inflorescence arching gracefully and bearing numerous 2.5 to 3-inch flowers.

Care Instructions

Light: Provide bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is approaching dryness. The frequency will depend on your growing conditions. It is important that the roots have a chance to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent rot.

Temperature: This hybrid thrives in intermediate temperatures. Aim for daytime temperatures between 70-80°F and a nighttime drop to 60-65°F.

Humidity: Maintain a humidity level of 50-70%. If your growing area is dry, consider using a humidity tray or a small humidifier.

Potting Medium: A well-draining orchid mix is essential. A mix of fir bark, charcoal, and perlite is a common and effective choice. Repot every two years or when the potting mix begins to break down.

Offered in 4" pots.
