Commonly known as the "Dancing Lady" orchid, a glance at the profusion of blooms on a mature Oncidesa Gower Ramsey and you'll immediately see why. Each small flower is a uniform, brilliant canary-yellow, dominated by a large, ruffled lip that resembles a full, swirling skirt. With dozens, sometimes hundreds, of these 1.5 in. blooms held aloft on long, branching, gracefully arching spikes that can reach over 3 ft., the slightest breeze sets the entire display in motion. It’s a cheerful, fluttering spectacle, a veritable chorus line of golden dancers.
This robust hybrid was registered by Koh Keng Hoe in 1977. Its parentage is a cross between Oncidesa Goldiana and Oncidesa Guinea Gold, a lineage that pulls from some very resilient and floriferous species. Oncidesa Goldiana is a primary hybrid of Gomesa flexuosa and Oncidium sphacelatum. Gomesa flexuosa hails from the warm, humid subtropical regions of Brazil and Argentina, while Oncidium sphacelatum is found over a wide range from Mexico down through Central America and into Venezuela, inhabiting tropical and mountain rainforests from sea level up to about 3,280 ft. This genetic combination contributes to the Gower Ramsey’s adaptability and vigor.
The plant itself is a sympodial epiphyte, forming clusters of ovoid to round pseudobulbs, each about 2-3 in. high. These are topped by one or two lanceolate, leathery, medium-green leaves that can be up to a foot long. A healthy plant is a vigorous grower, and its blooming season is not strictly defined, often gracing its grower with its sunny disposition in the spring, summer, or fall. While not known for a strong fragrance, the sheer volume of its floral display is its most captivating attribute.
Care Instructions
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, around 1,500-2,500 foot-candles. An east-facing window or a shaded south-facing window is suitable. The leaves should be a bright, olive-green.
Water: Water thoroughly when the potting medium is approaching dryness but still slightly damp. These orchids do not like to dry out completely, but neither do they tolerate soggy conditions. Reduce watering frequency slightly during cooler winter months.
Temperature: Intermediate to warm temperatures are preferred. Daytime temperatures should range from 70-85°F, with a nighttime drop to 55-65°F.
Humidity: A humidity level of 50-70% is ideal. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues, especially in higher humidity.
Potting Medium: A well-draining orchid mix is crucial. Fine to medium-grade fir bark mixed with perlite and charcoal is a common choice. Repot every two to three years, or when the potting medium begins to break down.
