If you are looking for the absolute "King" of the slipper orchids, Paphiopedilum Prince Edward of York is the undisputed heavy hitter for your collection. This primary hybrid between Paph. sanderianum and Paph. rothschildianum is legendary among enthusiasts for its dramatic, architectural presence and its status as a true "holy grail" orchid.

While this plant is currently in its non-blooming stage, it is the perfect investment for a grower who enjoys the journey of cultivating a masterpiece. As it matures, it will produce massive, multi-floral spikes featuring some of the longest, most elegant "ribbon" petals in the orchid world.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • A Living Legend: This hybrid combines the "King of Paphs" (rothschildianum) with the "Long-Petaled Queen" (sanderianum), resulting in flowers that are nothing short of regal.

  • Stunning Foliage: Even without flowers, the plant is a beauty. It features wide, strap-shaped, leathery green leaves that look lush and tropical year-round.

  • Massive Bloom Potential: Once mature, the twisted, burgundy-striped petals can reach incredible lengths, creating a weeping, elegant silhouette that stops people in their tracks.

  • Collector's Pride: Growing a Prince Edward of York from a young plant to its first bloom is a rite of passage for serious orchid hobbyists and a testament to your growing skills.

Quick Care Guide:

  • Light: Low to medium filtered light. Avoid direct hot sun, which can scorch the leaves. An east-facing window or a shaded south-facing spot is perfect.

  • Water: Keep the media consistently moist but never soggy. Unlike Cattleyas, Paphs do not have pseudobulbs to store water, so they should not be allowed to dry out completely.

  • Temperature: Intermediate to Warm (65°F – 85°F). It thrives in a stable home environment with good humidity.

  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced orchid fertilizer at half-strength every two weeks. These are "heavy feeders" compared to other Paphs, but they appreciate a flush with pure water once a month to prevent salt buildup.
