Add a piece of award-winning genetics to your orchid collection. Phalaenopsis amboinensis is an iconic warm-growing species native to Indonesia (specifically Ambon Island and Sulawesi). The specific clone 'Nicole' was recognized with an Award of Merit (AM) by the American Orchid Society (AOS) for its exceptionally round, flat flower form and incredibly saturated color, making it a highly coveted piece for serious collectors.

Plant Details

  • Flower: Stunning, waxy, star-shaped blooms. The 'Nicole' clone is famous for its bright cream-to-yellow background heavily overlaid with thick, concentric, brick-red to mahogany barring.

  • Sequential Bloomer: This species produces flowers sequentially along the same spike. A single spike can remain active and produce beautiful blooms for several years!

  • Fragrance: Highly fragrant! Emits a musky, slightly citrus or spicy-sweet scent that is most prominent in warm, morning light.

  • Foliage: Features lush, bright green, glossy leaves that tend to grow quite large and slightly pendulous as the plant matures.

  • Skill Level: Intermediate. A rewarding species for those who can provide consistent warmth and moisture.

Growing Requirements

Because P. amboinensis comes from the hot, humid lowlands of Indonesia, it prefers slightly warmer and shadier conditions than many other Phalaenopsis species.

Light Low to moderate indirect light. This species naturally grows deeper in the forest canopy and will easily sunburn if exposed to harsh light.
Water Keep evenly moist. Due to its thin native environment, it does not like to dry out completely. Water just as the medium approaches dryness.
Temperature Warm to hot growing. Ideal daytime temperatures are 75–85°F (24–29°C) year-round. It does not need a winter temperature drop to induce blooming.
Humidity Thrives in high humidity (60–80%). An indoor humidifier or a grow tent/greenhouse environment is highly recommended.
Potting Performs beautifully in high-quality New Zealand sphagnum moss or a fine bark mix that retains moisture evenly.
