Phalaenopsis schilleriana is a stunning orchid species endemic to the Philippines. Unlike the standard solid-green grocery store Phalaenopsis (moth orchids), this species is highly prized by collectors for two distinct features: its cascading sprays of delicate pink flowers and its beautiful, dramatically patterned foliage.

  • The Foliage: Even when not in bloom, this orchid is a showstopper. The leaves are mottled with striking dark green and silvery-grey patterns on top, with deep purple undersides.

  • The Blooms: It produces branching spikes that can hold dozens (sometimes hundreds on mature specimen plants) of soft pink flowers. The blooms typically span 2.5 to 3.5 inches across.

  • The Fragrance: Unlike most common moth orchids, Phal. schilleriana is fragrant. In the right conditions—usually in the morning under bright light—the flowers emit a sweet, rose-like scent.

  • Light: Bright, indirect. Can take slightly more light than standard moth orchids, but no direct midday sun.

  • Water: Let the potting mix dry out almost completely between waterings. Roots must breathe.

  • Temperature: Warm-growing (75–85°F / 24–29°C days). Needs a ~10-degree temperature drop at night in the fall to trigger a flower spike.

  • Humidity: 50–75%.

  • Potting: Chunky bark mix or mounted on cork bark. Avoid dense, moisture-retaining moss.
