Expand your species collection with Phalaenopsis stuartiana. Endemic to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, this species is a close sibling to Phal. schilleriana but boasts a distinct, highly sought-after aesthetic. The "Tipo" (standard type) form produces branching sprays of crisp white flowers, featuring lateral sepals and lips that are heavily speckled with striking mahogany to cinnamon-brown spots.

Like its pink cousin, stuartiana is a treat for foliage lovers. The leaves are beautifully mottled with silver-grey and green, making it a highly attractive houseplant even when it’s not in active bloom. A mature specimen can put on an absolute show, producing dozens of flowers on a single branched spike.

Plant Details

  • Flower: White upper petals and sepals, with the lower half (lateral sepals and lip) boasting a yellow hue overlaid with dense, dramatic reddish-brown spotting.

  • Fragrance: Very faint (some detect a mild coffee/vanilla scent, though it is not primarily grown for fragrance like schilleriana).

  • Roots: Notably distinctive! The roots of stuartiana are famously flat and silvery.

  • Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate. An excellent choice for anyone looking to transition from standard grocery store hybrids to true botanical species.

Growing Requirements

Phalaenopsis stuartiana is a robust grower when its specific needs are met. It prefers slightly more airflow and root aeration than heavily hybridized moth orchids:
Light Bright, indirect light. It thrives in slightly brighter conditions than standard Phalaenopsis, but will burn in direct, hot sun.
Water Allow the potting medium to dry out almost completely between waterings. The flat, silver roots are prone to rot if kept constantly wet.
Temperature Warm-growing. Prefers daytime temperatures of 75–85°F (24–29°C). A seasonal temperature drop of about 10 degrees at night in autumn will trigger spiking.
Humidity Thrives in 60–80% humidity, but adapts well to average household humidity (around 50%) if watered correctly.
Potting Must have excellent drainage. We recommend a chunky bark mix, or mounting on a cork slab if you have a greenhouse or high-humidity environment.
