Rlc. Bangkok City is a stunning hybrid that produces large, showy flowers glowing with the intensity of a tropical sunset. The broad petals and sepals are a brilliant golden-yellow, heavily overlaid with a rich, vibrant orange. This fiery color provides a dramatic backdrop for the spectacular, full-form lip, which is a deep, velvety ruby-red with intricate ruffling at the margin. The throat of the lip typically shows golden-yellow veining, pulling the color palette together. The blooms are waxy, long-lasting, and can be fragrant. The plant is a standard-sized Cattleya grower with robust pseudobulbs and deep green, leathery leaves.

Rlc. Bangkok City is a modern Thai hybrid registered in 2020 by S. Noisuwan. It is a cross between two other successful hybrids: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Chomthong Fancy and Rhyncholaeliocattleya Chunyeah. This parentage continues a celebrated line of breeding aimed at creating large, vibrant, sunset-toned Cattleya flowers. Its genetic background is heavily influenced by species like Cattleya dowiana, which contributes the deep yellow base color and the rich velvet-red lip pigment. The Rhyncholaelia in its ancestry lends the wide, frilly lip shape that makes this flower so impressive.

🌿 How to Grow Rlc. Bangkok City

Light This hybrid requires bright, filtered light to bloom well. An east-facing window with morning sun or a shaded south-facing window is an excellent location. In a greenhouse, provide about 70% shade. The leaves should be a firm, apple-green color. If they are dark green and soft, the plant is not receiving enough light; if they appear yellowish or scorched, the light is too intense.

Temperature Rlc. Bangkok City thrives in intermediate to warm conditions. Ideal daytime temperatures are between 70-85°F, with a recommended nighttime drop to 55-65°F. This 10-15°F difference between day and night is important for initiating a strong blooming cycle. Protect the plant from temperatures falling below 50°F.

Water Proper watering is key. This orchid must experience a distinct "wet-dry" cycle. Water the plant thoroughly, allowing water to flush through the pot, and then do not water again until the potting media is completely dry. In a 5- or 6-inch pot, this may mean watering once every 5-10 days, depending on your home's humidity and warmth. The pseudobulbs store water, making the plant tolerant of this dry period.

Humidity and Airflow Moderate humidity, between 50% and 70%, is preferred. In drier household environments, using a humidity tray or a humidifier can be beneficial. Just as important as humidity is air circulation. Gentle, constant air movement from a small fan helps prevent fungal and bacterial issues, especially on the roots and new growths.

Fertilizer These plants are moderate feeders. During periods of active growth (when new roots or pseudobulbs are forming), apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at half-strength with every watering. You can also use a quarter-strength solution weekly. During the winter or when the plant is dormant, reduce feeding to once or twice a month.

Potting and Media Repot every 2 to 3 years, or when the potting mix has broken down and no longer drains quickly. The best time to repot is just as new roots are beginning to emerge from the base of the newest pseudobulb. Use a very coarse, airy, and fast-draining orchid bark mix. Do not "over-pot"; choose a container that will accommodate only 2-3 years of new growth.
