Heavy Flowers, Big Scent, Small Footprint
A classic hybrid cross from the Zygopetalum alliance, known for packing serious visual punch into a surprisingly compact, tight-clumping footprint.
Each bloom opens with rich, waxy dark brown sepals and petals heavily barred in mossy green, anchored by an oversized, flared labellum covered in intricate violet-purple vein patterns. The thick, shiny texture gives the three-inch flowers a solid, sculpted look, with the dramatically flared lip fanning out like an upturned party skirt.
If you have never grown a Zygo, the fragrance alone is worth the bench space. The blooms emit a powerful, room-filling perfume that peaks in the bright morning hours—a complex mix of sweet hyacinth and fresh-picked spring flowers. It grows with compact pseudobulbs that stack tightly, meaning you get big, heavy, multi-flowered spikes on a plant that does not demand half your growing space. A single lead frequently throws multiple flower stems, giving you weeks of incredible color and scent indoors.
Quick Care Guide
-
Light: Bright, indirect light. An east-facing window or filtered west exposure keeps leaves a healthy medium green.
-
Water: Keep evenly moist during active growth. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings, but never let the roots dry out completely.
-
Temperature: Nights 52–60°F, days 65–80°F. Cooler night temperatures help trigger strong, heavy flower spikes.
-
Fertilizer: Balanced orchid fertilizer applied weekly at half-strength during spring and summer.
-
Mature size: Foliage stays compact around 12 to 16 inches tall, with upright flower spikes reaching up to 18 inches.
